PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain reading of an image in accordance with paper sizes without causing missing of reading by suppressing bias or bowed filling when large and small sizes of paper are intermingled in a bundle of the originals, even on the occurrence of the bias or bowed filling. SOLUTION: One-end sides of paper sheets in a breadth direction set in a paper feed hopper 4c provided to an automatic paper feeding device are pushed onto a guard to arrange the paper sheets. A paper feed roller 5 placed on one side of this guard feeds the paper sheets to a read section, a paper size sensor 10 discriminates the size of paper before reaching the read section so that an image of the paper sheet is read to have a read area equivalent to that of paper with a size larger by one step than the actual size of this paper.
