PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an encoder which can be fixed to a limited space by holding a bearing with a member, having L-shaped cross-section formed on a base and a supporting member formed on a hollow rotor and making thin the encoder through use of only one bearing. SOLUTION: A member, having an L-shaped cross-section 1a for holding the end part of the outer ring 3 of a bearing 3 is formed at the inner edge of a base 1, and a member 5a for holding the inner ring 3b of the bearing 3 is provided at the end of a hollow rotor 5. The members 1a, 5a are arranged at the diagonal positions of the bearing 3 to hold the bearing 3 between. Since the hollow rotor 5 can be held with only one bearing 3, an encoder can be formed flat by decreasing the thickness in the axial direction.
