PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve abrasion resistance without deteriorating the other characteristics of an electric wire covering material by using a covering composition mainly made of a polyvinyl chloride resin and containing a methacrylic resin for covering. SOLUTION: An electric wire is covered with a covering composition mainly made of a polyvinyl chloride resin, and the covering composition contains a methacrylic resin. The content of the methacrylic resin is preferably set to 5-40 pts.wt., more preferably to 10-30 pts.wt. against the total 100 pts.wt. of the polyvinyl chloride resin and the methacrylic resin. The molecular weight of the methacrylic resin is preferably set to the standard grade of the average molecular weight in the range of about 100,000-300,000 or the impact-resistant grade blended with acrylic rubber into it. When particularly high abrasion resistance is required, the grade containing no rubber component is preferably used. An electric wire can be made fine in diameter and lightweight, and the chlorine content per covering composition unit weight can be reduced.
