PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magneto-optical recording medium capable of reproducing a signal having a period below the diffraction limit of light without reducing the amplitude of the reproduced signal and having good sensitivity to recording and reproduction. SOLUTION: Leakage magnetic flux generated from a recording layer 15 and a magnetic flux adjusting layer 16 is controlled at a temperature not exceeding a temperature at which the magnetization information in the recording layer 15 is transferred to a reproduction assisting layer 2 (transfer temperature region). When a part including a recording magnetic domain 6 is heated to the transfer temperature region or above with light beams 5, the magnetization of the magnetic flux adjusting layer 16 corresponding to the recording magnetic domain 6 disappears and the leakage magnetic flux is generated from the recording magnetic domain 6. By this leakage magnetic flux, the magnetization information in the recording layer 15 is transferred to a magnetic domain 8 of the reproduction assisting layer 2 and the magnetic domain 8 formed in the layer 2 is enlarged and transferred to a magnetic domain 9 of the reproduction layer 1.
