PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recordable optical disk device capable of determining a non-recorded area within a short time. SOLUTION: A TOT signal (total signal) corresponding to the total quantity of reflected light is compared with a defect detecting level L1 by a comparator 26 to generate an output. An RFRP signal corresponding to the envelope of an RF signal obtained from the reflected light is compared with a non-recorded area detecting level L2 by a comparator 25 to generate an output B. After the output B is inverted by a NAND 32 to generate an output C, the output A and the output C are multiplied by an AND 33 to generate a non-recording detecting signal D. By eliminating a short pulse from this non-recording detecting signal D, a non-recorded area determining signal is generated and, based on this signal, determination is made as to whether an area being scanned by an optical spot is a recorded area or a non-recorded area.
