PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a GH mode liquid crystal display element which is able to be driven with a low voltage and has high contrast. SOLUTION: To a liquid crystal layer 20 having hybrid alignment, formed by providing a high pretilt alignment layer 5 which makes a liquid crystal 7a align in a direction almost normal to a first substrate 1 and a homogeneous alignment layer 6 which makes a liquid crystal 7b align in parallel to a second substrate 2, furthermore a chiral dopant is added so as to form the alignment of the liquid crystals 7... as a twisted structure. Thereby a GH mode liquid crystal display element is obtained which can be driven with a low driving voltage and yet can display with high contrast.
