PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dry up an irregular refractory containing graphite being employed as the inner wall of a pig iron mixing vehicle without causing any explosive cracking by heating a mixture of irregular refractory with a gas of specified temperature in order to remove free water therefrom and then heating it directly with fire. SOLUTION: When an irregular refractory containing graphite is applied to the inner wall of a pig iron mixing vehicle, an irregular refractory material containing 3-20 wt.% of graphite and 0.5-8 wt.% of alumina cement is mixed, poured to a specified position, cured and then dried up by heating. In the heating/drying process, the poured irregular refractory is exposed at first to a gas of 400 deg.C or below, i.e., hot air, and dried. The poured molding material is heated above the boiling point of water and free water is removed therefrom. In a second stage heating/drying process, it is dried up by heating directly with fire from a burner, for example, in order to remove crystal water principally.
