<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device which is light-weight, high in reflectivity and free of parallaxes by alternately laminating liquid crystal layers and layers, which are different in refractive index from liquid crystals and at non-impressing of a voltage and having a refractive index in matching with the refractive index of the liquid crystals at impressing of the voltage. SOLUTION: Liquid crystal layers 1 and the layers, consisting of the material having the refractive index different from the refractive index of the liquid crystal layers at non- impressing of the voltage are alternately constituted at the periods of the wavelengths of a visible light region. If the layers separating the liquid crystals are so formed that their refractive indices match with the refractive index of an ordinary ray, when the liquid crystals of positive dielectric constant anisotropy are used, and if the layers are so formed that the refractive indices match with the refractive index of an extraordinary ray, when the liquid crystals having the negative dielectric constant anisotropy are used, the design of the layers can be made in such a manner that the refractive indices match with the refractive index of the liquid crystal layers at the impressing of the voltage is made possible. The refractive indices of the intermediate layers are different from the refractive index of the liquid crystals at the non-impressing of the voltage, so that the periodic structure of visible light wavelengths is obtained, and the light of the wavelengths corresponding to the periods is reflected strongly in the direction for satisfying the Bragg. In addition, the refractive indices of the intermediate layers and the liquid crystal layer become equal to each other at impressing of the voltage, and the reflection will not occur.</p> |
