<p>This invention discloses a method for real time compression of a stream of characters, the method including performing an ongoing evaluation of frequency of occurrence of strings of characters within said stream of characters, performing an ongoing assignment of symbols to the strings, based on output from said evaluation performing step, thereby to compress the strings, the symbol assignment performing step including assigning a first symbol to at least one string whose frequency of occurrence is not constant, based on an early evaluation of the frequency of occurrence of the string, and assigning a different symbol to the same string, based on a later evaluation of the frequency of occurrence of the string. A system for real time compression of a stream of characters, the system is also disclosed.</p> |
