PURPOSE: A method for controlling power in a CDMA system having various cell radii is provided to eliminate various performance deterioration factors, such as call disconnection, interference, etc., and achieve communication under optimum communication environments by variably setting up a power control reference value according to each base station's cell radius. CONSTITUTION: A mobile station is handed off from a local base station's own cell to a remote base station's neighboring cell(S1). A base station controller in charge of the external loop power control of the local base station and the remote base station compares the received power average value of the own cell and the power control reference value of the neighboring cell at the handoff point(S2). In case that the received power average value of the own cell is identical to the power control reference value of the neighboring cell(S3), the base station controller executes external loop power control, while maintaining the power control reference value of the own cell, so that the mobile station can transmit signals using the power identical to a transmitting power at the own cell(S5).
