PURPOSE: A method of examining an air conditioner is provided to examine the switch state of a four-way valve through the difference of loads before and after running a compressor and to enhance the reliability of a system through the examine of the four-way valve. CONSTITUTION: A control method of an air conditioner includes the steps of measuring an initial pipe temperature of an indoor heat exchanger, switching a four-way valve into one of cooling/heating modes while running a compressor during certain time, producing the difference between the current and initial pipe temperatures, and deciding the switch mode of the four-way valve with difference between cooling/heating reference temperatures per mode.
