PURPOSE: A split type refrigerator is provided in which a plurality of isolated refrigerator compartments and freezer compartments allow users to have an independent operation for a selected compartment, thereby lowering power consumption. CONSTITUTION: A refrigerator includes a contact sensor unit attached at a predetermined portion of the refrigerator having a multiple compartments so as to sense the separation or contact of the compartments, a temperature sensor unit attached to each compartment so as to sense the temperature of each compartment, a microcomputer for outputting a control signal when an isolation or contact signal and a sensed temperature are applied thereto from the contact sensor unit and the temperature sensor unit, respectively, a power converting unit for converting a power when a control signal is output from the microcomputer and feeding the converted power to a compressor of the refrigerator, and a load driving unit for driving a load for each compartment of the refrigerator in accordance with a control signal applied from the microcomputer signal.
