In a process for the vitrification of products in the form of solid pieces or particles that may be contaminated, the process uses a furnace fitted with a heating system, advantageously a burner that is pref. fed with a combustion gas and oxygen. The furnace is preheated prior to the introduction of the prod. and the heating is stopped or reduced to a minimum whilst the prod. is in the furnace in a form where it may allow the emission of dusts that will be entrained by the furnace gases. When the furnace charge has been entirely transformed into a vitreous mass that no longer emits polluting dusts the heating system may be restored to full operation.
