An automotive gearbox has an input shaft (10) to a clutch to a drive shaft. One output shaft (12) is located parallel to the input shaft and thence to the vehicle drive wheels (22, 24), and a third shaft (14) parallel to the first two. The gearbox has six forward gears. The input shaft (10) has no more than five cogs of which two (26, 28) are fixed to the shaft and operate in the first and second gears. The other cogs turn on the shaft. The output shaft (12) has seven cogs of which five are fixed to the shaft (12), while the other two cogs (48, 50) rotate on the shaft. The third shaft (14) has two or three cogs, of which one (54, 74) is fixed to the shaft, and one or more (56, 76, 78) rotate on the shaft.
