PURPOSE: An ASS(Access Switching Subsystem) having a number translation function in a full electronic exchange system and a method for translating numbers thereby are provided to distribute the load of a number translation processor by adding a prefix translation unit to an ASS so that the ASS can execute prefix translation independently. CONSTITUTION: An ASS(10) is composed of a calling subscriber control block(11), a call processing block(13), and a called subscriber control block(12). The calling subscriber control block(11) requests destination number translation to a number translation block(21) in a number translation processor(20) or transmits a routing request to a routing control block, based on a prefix translation result transferred from the call processing block(13). The call processing block(13), containing a prefix translation database, translates a prefix transmitted from the calling subscriber control block(11), based on the prefix translation data stored in the prefix translation database, and notifies a prefix translation result of the calling subscriber control block(11). The called subscriber control block(12), if a destination number translation is transmitted from the number translation block(21), controls a relevant device to call a called subscriber corresponding to the destination number.
