PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a free piston type auto tensioner for obtaining ever-stable damping characteristics. SOLUTION: This auto-tensioner is equipped with: a cylindrical body 2, a rod 3 arranged slidably with the inner periphery of the body 2, a high pressure chamber 7 for housing hydraulic oil, a revervoir chamber 8 for storing the oil in the chamber 7, a first energizing member 10 for energizing the rod 3 in a direction protruded from the body 2, a second energizing member 11 for energizing a piston 6 in a direction for pressing the chamber 8, and a check valve mechanism 9 for regulating the discharge of the oil from inside the chamber 7 to the chamber 8, and also allowing the inflow of the oil into inside the chamber 7 from the chamber 8; and a seal 5 is arranged on the outer peripheral surface of the rod 3, and the mechanism 9 is equipped with: a valve seat member 12 having the outer peripheral surface fitted at fine gaps for demarcating the chambers 7 and 8 and also an oil path for communicating the chambers 7 and 8, and a check ball 13 for opening/closing the oil passage.
