PURPOSE: A method of protecting a drum is to prevent fatal damage of heads in the drum and fault of a deck from generating, when moisture or bond has been attached in a video tape. CONSTITUTION: A method of protecting a drum comprises the steps of: detecting the operational state of a video cassette tape and detecting a PG/FG(phase generator/frequency generator) signal generated from a drum in a MICOM, when the video tape is being played or recorded; determining in the micom whether or not the PG/FG signal of the drum is in a normal state; if so, continuing playing or recording; if not outputting a control signal in the MICOM to stop the operation of a capstan and to switch the deck to the stop mode; and outputting a control signal to an OSD(on-screen display), outputting an alert message and ejecting the cassette tape.
