PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for extracting a specific packet in an ATM system is provided to execute a diagnostic function for packets having different packet headers and to achieve the execution of the diagnostic function or an execution suspension function in system setup and system operation. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for extracting a specific packet in an ATM system is comprised of a packet input part, a header comparison part, a storage part, a packet extraction part, a diagnosis processing part, and an ATM switch part. The packet input part receives packets from a physical layer. The header comparison part stores the headers of the packets that want the execution of a diagnostic function in the storage part. The storage part stores the contents of packet headers. The packet extraction part extracts a specific packet. The diagnosis processing part executes the diagnostic function.
