The engine has at least five intake valves, with one valve being operated at low RPM, and all valves at high RPM. The valve with regular actuation associated with least frequent operational parameters of the engine, executes a small stroke when switched off. In an IC engine with three intake valves per cylinder, the smallest valve is associated with the lowest RPM, the second valve with medium RPM, and the largest valve with the highest RPM. The first and third valves are operated constantly, so that the first valve is constantly operated at max. stroke, and the third valve is operated with an extremely small stroke during lower and medium RPM.
