HEPARIN COFACTOR II-CONTAINING COMPOSITIONS AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

A method for inactivating a virus which likely contaminates HCII by treating with a trialkyl phosphate while inhibiting the occurrence of a denatured protein and elevating the yield of HCII activity; and preparations obtained by this method. More particularly, the above method involves the step of treating with a trialkyl phosphate a HCII-containing composition, which is likely contaminated with a virus, in the presence of an efficacious amount of at least one member selected from among sugars, sugar alcohols, acidic amino acids or salts thereof, preferably a sugar or a sugar alcohol and an acidic amino acid or its salt and still preferably sorbitol and glutamic acid or its salt. Compositions containing HCII which can be obtained by the above-described treatment and are substantially free from infective viruses while maintaining pharmaceutically effective activity and having a lipid membrane.
