PURPOSE: An apparatus for starting an engine of a vehicle is provided to automatically stop a starting motor after finishing starting an engine of a vehicle. CONSTITUTION: A starting motor is turned on if a starting signal is inputted from a key switch. The counter electromotive force of the starting motor is produced by a voltage signal and a current signal of a starting motor terminal, and the rotational frequency is produced by the counter electromotive force. Next, the produced rotational force of the starting motor is compared with reference rotational frequency. Finally, the starting motor is turned off if the rotational frequency is higher than the reference rotational frequency. That is, the starting motor is automatically turned off if the rotational frequency of an engine reaches certain rotational frequency. An over-running clutch is eliminated so that the total length and weight of a starter is reduced.
