PURPOSE: A device for controlling power of a VCR and a method therefor are provided to minimize power consumption. CONSTITUTION: In a device for controlling power of a VCR, a relay switch is disposed at a power supply side, and turned off when the user inputs an ultra power saving key. A charging voltage of an electrostatic capacitor is checked. When the charging voltage is greater than a previously-set reference voltage, the power saving mode is maintained by keeping the relay switch off. When the charging voltage is smaller than the reference voltage, the power for driving a microcomputer in the VCR is charged in the electrostatic capacitor by turning on the relay switch. Thereafter, the power saving mode is maintained by turning off the relay switch again.
