PURPOSE: A method for automatically converting a record speed of a VCR is provided to solve a problem that a tape which in a record mode is short of length by making the speed of the tape being in record mode to be identical to that of a tape being in the playback mode. CONSTITUTION: In a method for automatically converting a record speed of a VCR, it is first determined if a first deck is in a playback mode(101), and, when the first deck is in the playback mode(101), a tape speed mode of the first deck is detected(102), and it is determined if the tape speed mode is in a normal mode(103). When the tape speed mode is in the normal mode, a tape speed mode of a second deck is set at the normal mode(104), and the record operation in the second deck is performed at the normal mode(105). When the tape speed mode of the first deck is not in the normal mode, it is determined if the tape speed mode is in an EP mode. When in the EP mode, the tape speed mode of the second deck is set at the EP mode(107) and the record operation of the second deck is performed at the EP mode(108).
