<p>A liquid crystal cell (1) having a liquid crystal layer (15) sealed between a pair of transparent substrates (2, 5) comprises a first polarizer (of absorption type) (21) on the front side, and a second polarizer (reflection type) (22), a third polarizer (absorption type or reflection type) (25) and an auxiliary light source (31) on the back side. Light from the auxiliary light source (31) is polarized by the third polarizer (25) and the second polarizer (22). The polarization of light from the second polarizer (22) to the liquid crystal cell (1) is increased, and the uniformity and contrast of display are increased, which are deteriorated by the lack and unevenness of polarization of the second polarizer (22).</p> |
