PURPOSE: A method and system for operating an STP(Spanning Tree Protocol) in network high traffic is provided to make an STP operated correctly even in a high traffic state of a network. CONSTITUTION: A received packet processing system is comprised of Ethernet ports(10), a packet receiving queue(20), a packet receiving interrupt service routine(30), a host CPU(40), a timer(50), and an STP task(60). The Ethernet ports(10) accept received packets. The packet receiving queue(20) stores the received packets. The packet receiving interrupt service routine(30) inputs the packets from the packet receiving queue(20) in received sequence. The host CPU(40) inputs the packets from the packet receiving interrupt service routine(30). The timer(50), controlled by the host CPU(40), disables a packet receiving interrupt to prevent the host CPU from wasting all its time in receiving the packets. The STP task(60) makes the packet receiving interrupt service routine(30) receive the packets.
