To exchange a roller at a calender, the old and new rollers are held together temporarily near the calender. The first roller is initially moved away from the calender, and then the second roller is moved towards the calender. The second roller is moved into a waiting position near the calender, and the first roller is moved out of its working position (B) in the calender into an exchange position near the waiting position, and held there. The second roller is moved into the exchange position, is transferred into the working position (B), and the first roller is carried away. The movements of the first roller into the holding position and the second roller into the exchange position take place simultaneously. The waiting, working (B), exchange and holding positions are on a straight line, for the rollers to be given a simultaneous straight line movement. Or the holding and waiting positions match, and the rollers are given a simultaneous movement on a circular path. An Independent claim is included for a calender roller exchange mechanism (15) and a transport system (13). The mechanism (15) has holders to take the first (8) and second (21) rollers Preferred Features: The exchange mechanism (15) has a holding unit, where the holder (20) for the first roller (8) is taken from the exchange position and the holder (19) for the second roller (21) is moved into the exchange position. Both holders can be on a slide with a linear setting movement, or they can be on a rotating system (17). The transport system (13) is a crane, or a slide which moves parallel to the stack (4) of calender rollers. A positioning unit (12) moves the roller at the calender in and out of the working position (B). The exchange mechanism is moved into place by its positioning unit, between the roller working and exchange positions. The exchange mechanism (15) has a jib (18), to lock on to the calender (1), which has a stack (4) of rollers at an angle to the horizontal, with its upper side accessible to the exchange mechanism (15).
