The invention relates to a method for determining .gamma.-secretase activity , to individual components of the method and the application of the method. Th e invention provides a novel method for determining .gamma.-secretase activity and for detecting .gamma.-secretase; particular embodiments of the method relate to methods for identifying a .gamma.-secretase or a cDNA which codes for a .gamma.-secretase and methods for identifying substances which can inhibit the activity of a .gamma.-secretase. Substances of this type are particularly significant since they can be used, e.g. as pharmaceutical acti ve agents, e.g. for treating Alzheimer's disease.
