A brake plate(4) which is movable in the vertical direction is fitted on the underside of the motor vehicle and during brake operation is moved downwards in the direction of the road surface(2), pressed against, and in contact with it produces a braking action. The brake plate is lowered and held against the road surface by action of pneumatic cylinders(6) fitted on the underside of the vehicle, or by a flexible inflatable bag.
