PURPOSE: A method for reconfiguring virtual paths using a central controller is provided to yield a bandwidth necessary for every virtual path more exactly and to reduce the quantity of messages generated between ATM exchanges greatly. CONSTITUTION: Each ATM exchange measures input traffic and network performance information periodically and transmits it to a central controller(1001). The central controller, receiving traffic and network performance information(1002), selects BIC(Bandwidth Increase Candidates), calculates an increased bandwidth of BIC(1003) and judges whether the increased bandwidth is smaller than an available bandwidth in the transmission path(1004). If the increased bandwidth is not larger than the available bandwidth, the central controller selects BDC(Bandwidth Decrease Candidates), calculates a decreased bandwidth of BDC(1005) and transmits a bandwidth decrease indication message to each ATM exchange(1006). Each ATM exchange modifies its logical bandwidth and physical bandwidth(1007,1008) and transmits a bandwidth decrease complete message to the central controller(1009). The central controller allocates the available bandwidth to BIC and transmits a bandwidth increase indication message for BIC to each ATM exchange(1010). Each ATM exchange increases its bandwidth(1011) and transmits a bandwidth increase complete message(1012). The central controller, receiving the bandwidth increase complete message, updates network configuration information(1013).
