A liquid-crystal display device comprises a liquid-crystal cell (3) including a liquid-crystal layer (31) sealed between a pair of transparent substrates (32, 34) and adapted to apply optical effects on incident light when voltage is applied to the liquid-crystal layer; a first polarizer (1) on the front side; a second polarizer (5) on the back side; and an auxiliary light source (10). The first polarizer (1) transmits a first linearly polarized component. The second polarizer (5) reflects a second linearly polarized component and transmits a third linearly polarized component whose polarization is perpendicular to that of the second linearly polarized component. A third polarizer (6) for transmitting a fourth linearly polarized component is provided between the second polarizer (5) and the auxiliary light source (10). The third and the fourth linearly polarized components are different in polarization within a range of +45 to -45 degrees.
