PURPOSE: A controlling method of operating an air conditioner is provided to prevent an indoor heat exchanger from being frozen and a compressor from being overloaded because of long-term operation. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner comprises an indoor heat exchange temperature sensor checking the surface temperature of a heat exchanger and sending off the temperature information to a controlling board, a controlling board controlling the operation of an indoor fan, an outdoor fan and a compressor for heating or cooling operation, a compressor(50)circulating refrigerant to an indoor heat exchanger and an outdoor heat exchanger, an outdoor fan not being always turned off but temporarily and an indoor fan being operated at lower speed than it used to be while a compressor runs,thereby moving air to both heat exchangers to improve the efficiency of heating exchange.
