PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for preventing overheating of a head cartridge are provided to normally drive a printer system by initiating the system again if a preheating signal is excessively elongated when a substrate heater signal for preheating the head cartridge is continued. CONSTITUTION: A method for preventing overheating of a head cartridge includes the steps of initiating operation of a system for preventing overheating of head cartridge in case of abnormal operation, outputting a control signal of a substrate heater(s11), initiating counting(s12), determining whether the substrate heater control signal is a normal signal or an abnormal signal(s13), stopping the counting when the substrate heater control signal is a normal signal(s14), outputting a trigger signal after finishing the counting if the substrate heater signal is an abnormal signal(s15), stopping the driving of the main system(s16), and initiating the main system again(s18), wherein an up-counter determines whether the substrate heater signal is normal or not.
