The controller controls/regulates an exhaust gas return or EGR mode so that exhaust gas is fed back from the engine (3) via an EGR path (13) to the inlet side, whereby the engine mode can be switched between all-cylinder mode and cut-off mode in which some cylinders (3a) are cut off. The EGR controller has an engine temp. detector unit (5), a comparator unit (2) for comparing the temp. with two threshold values, a unit (2) for determining the engine mode and a control unit (2).
