A vehicle wheel, especially with a one piece rim (1) and tubeless tire (3), has an emergency running surface (14) and annular recesses (10) in which the tire beads (6) are held by movable retainers (27). The retainers (27) are segmented and can be spring loaded (35) and moved mechanically or by air pressure through an actuating connection. The proportions and elasticity of the tire are defined to allow it to be fitted or removed by stretching it over the rim with the retainers (27) in the open position. The rim edges (2) are curved to minimize stresses during emergency running and the tire can have an additional protective strip in that region.
