A method for controlling an internal combustion engine (62) with a sequentia l turbocharging system (60) which limits an applied engine torque (80) to a dynamic engine torque limit value (74) to achieve increased turbocharger sha ft acceleration during the presence of a mode switch pending condition (92). Th e presence of the mode switch pending condition (92) indicates that the sequential turbocharging system (60) is operating in the first mode, in whic h the primary turbocharger (52) is active, and it is desired to operate the system (60) in the second mode, in which both the primary and secondary turbochargers (52, 54) are active.
