In the present invention there is disclosed a pharmaceutically acceptable composition for suppressing growth of tumor cells. The invented composition contains a protein having a domain consisting of syndecan ectodomain. syndecan can be represented by syndecane-1, syndecane-2, syndecane-3 or syndecane-4. In the present invention there is also claimed the use of the aforementioned protein for preparing a pharmaceutical composition used as a medicament for reducing or suppressing growth of tumor cells.
