In the present invention there is disclosed a method of suppressing bacteria and contaminating organisms. The invented method is characterized in that an effective antibacterial or contamination preventing amount of the compound of the general formula I, in which the symbols n, Re1 and R have specific meanings is applied either to those bacteria or contaminating organisms, respectively to a place where they occur. The invented method is suitable particularly for protection of abiotic materials different from wood and objects made of these abiotic materials or coated with these abiotic materials against the bacteria and contaminating organisms. Coating composition containing the above indicated compound of the general formula I and polymers or copolymers derived from such monomers as dialkyl siloxanes, acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, vinyl alcohol and allyl alcohol and esters derived thereof, maleic acid, styrene, vinyl chloride, butadiene, acrylamide, acrylonitrile or resins such as alkyd resins, polyurethanes, epoxy resins, phenolic resins and urea-formaldehyde resins.
