A valve timing control apparatus for an internal combustion engine has a lock pin (33) that is movably provided in an accommodation hole (32) of one of vanes (24) of a rotor (19). A screw portion (33a) is formed along part of the outer circumference of the lock pin (33), which is fixed to a shaft (70a) of a motor (70). When hydraulic pressure control is performed to maintain a housing (16) and the rotor (19) in a predetermined intermediate phase, the lock pin (33) moves in the axial direction of a cam shaft (11) in response to rotation of the motor (70) independently of the hydraulic pressure control, and engages a lock recess portion (34) formed in a sprocket (17).
