ARRAYED WAVEGUIDE GRATING MULTIPLEXER AND DEMULTIPLEXER

An arrayed waveguide grating multiplexer and demultiplexer (A) includes an arrayed waveguide grating (4) consisting of a plurality of channel waveguides (4a). The diffraction grating is connected on its sides with recessed edges (3b, 5a) of input and output slab waveguides (3, 5). The input and output slab waveguides have recessed edges (3a, 5b) on the other end, which connect a plurality of input waveguides (2) and a plurality of output waveguides (6). The edge (5a) of the output slab waveguide has a focal length (F2) greater than the focal length (F1) of the edge (3b) of the input slab waveguide. The optical multiplexer and demultiplexer (A) has a flat wavelength-loss characteristic in the pass band and contributes to the construction of optical multiplex communication systems of increased S/N ratio.
