Waste (28) of mineral wool is melted in an auxiliary melting unit (4), whereby the recycled melt (29) formed in the auxiliary melting unit (4), is conducted into a melting tank (1) and whereby a recycled waste gas (30) from the auxiliary melting unit (4) is supplied to the waste gas of the tank (1) and in conducted together therewith for heat exchange with combustion air for said melting tank (1). The apparatus for making the above described process consists a melting tank (1), a heat-exchange apparatus having the form of a recuperator (5) for heat exchange of waste gases from the tank (1) with combustion air, a fuel supply piping (22) for producing melting heat, a feeder (3) functioning as a filling device for a mixture (21) of starting materials, an auxiliary melting unit (4) with fuel inlet (26), a mechanism (43) for supplying recycled melt (29) from the auxiliary melting unit (4) into the melting tank (1) and a mechanism for conducting stream for supplying recycled waste gas (30) from the auxiliary melting unit (4) into the melting tank (1) waste gas before the waste gas enters a recuperator (5).
