The invented electric furnace has a melting chamber (1) with a cool roof, whereby glass batch (8) forms upper floating layer (9), and has a substantially horizontal bottom (6) and outlet in the form of socket-like throat (11A) beneath submersible partition (11B) for withdrawal of the produced glass melt and transfer thereof in the next chamber placed farther behind the outlet. The socket-like throat (11A) is at least in its upper section defined by a mobile baffle plate (16) forming the submersible partition (11B) having an upper section (18) protruding above the level of the floating glass batch (8) and an immersed bottom section (17) for complete immersion into the glass melt and having surfaces from metal or metal alloy resisting to corrosion due to the action of the melted glass.
