Hydrophilization process of plastic fillers for mass exchangers

In the present invention there is disclosed a hydrophilization process of plastic fillers for mass exchangers by employing sulfur trioxide in gaseous phase. The process is characterized by treating dry fillers with dry sulfonation gas containing 1 to 30 percent by volume sulfur trioxide under subatmospheric pressure in the range of 10 to 30 kPa and at a temperature in the range of 30 to 60 degC at which the sulfur trioxide is in gaseous form, subsequently it is neutralized with a dry gas containing 1 to 100 percent by volume ammonia and also under subatmospheric pressure ranging from 25 to 40 kPa. Then pressure is equalized to atmospheric pressure by a dry inert gas, whereupon the fillers are rinsed outside the space in which sulfonation and neutralization took place with water and dried up.
