A surface is wiped or smeared to obtain a sample for analysis using a device with an absorbent material 2 disposed at the end of a sleeve 1 to gather the sample. A moveable piston 4 is located at the other end of the sleeve and when it's rod 3 is moved, a liquid held between the piston 4 and a closure 7 passes through the closure e.g. a membrane, to the absorbent material. The liquid may be a rinsing, diluting or conditioning solution which conveys the sample from the absorbent to a detector which is typically an analytical test strip. |
