<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compounds in high yield and high selectivity by catalytically hydrogenating hydroxyethylbenzenes, etc., using ruthenium treated with a reducing agent before use as a catalyst. SOLUTION: The corresponding hydroxyethylbenzenes or hydroxyethylpyridines [e.g. a compound represented by formula I (X is CH or N; R1 and R2 are each H, hydroxyl or the like)] are catalytically hydrogenated by using ruthenium already treated with a reducing agent before use as a catalyst to thereby produce the objective compounds which may contain nitrogen atom in the cyclohexane ring in some cases [e.g. a compound represented by formula II (Y is CH2 or NH)]. The ruthenium catalyst is preferably a catalyst composed of metallic ruthenium on a carrier. The treatment with the reducing agent (e.g. hydrazine) is carried out in the presence of a solvent (e.g. water or isopropanol), e.g. at 20-80 deg.C under ordinary pressure to 5 bar pressure.</p> |
