PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for thickly forming an Fe-Al compd. layer having uniformly high hardness for preventing fretting wear. SOLUTION: At the time of coating the surface of a base material composed of a steel material with aluminum and executing diffusion under heating at 660 deg.C to form an Fe-Al compd. layer, in the case that (d) is defined as the thickness (μm) of the Al coating film and (t) is defined as the diffusing time (hr), the diffusing time is decided in such a manner that the ratio K of (d) to the square root of (t) is controlled to 40 to 200. In this way, a sound Fe-Al compd. layer having sufficient hardness can be obtd., and fretting can effectively be prevented.
