PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound, optically active, showing the smectic phase in a wide temperature range, and useful as a ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula I [R1 is a 3-20C alkyl or the like; X1 is O or the like; A is a group shown by formula II, or the like; Y is COO or the like; R1* is an optically active group of the formula C*H (CF3)-(CH2)m-O-CnH2n+1 ((m) is 2 to 5; and (n) is 1 to 3)], e.g. 4-(6-decyloxy-1,2,3,4- tetrahydro-2-naphthalenemethyloxy)cinnamic acid (R)-1-trifluoromethyl-3- methoxypropyl ester. The compound shown by formula I is obtained as the one shown by formula V by reducing a ketone containing trifluoromethyl group to obtain a fluorine-containing alcohol; esterifying and hydrolyzing the above compound to obtain an optically active alcohol; reacting the above compound with 4'-benzyloxy-4-biphenyl-carboxylic acid to obtain a compound shown by formula III, and reducing the above compound and reacting it with a compound shown by formula IV.
