摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain both a low-scattering surface modifier having high thermal stability in surface modifiers having a perfluoropolyether structure having the piperonyl group at the terminal and a magnetic recording medium having sufficient lubricity on the surface even after carrying out long-term continuous rotation and to provide a magnetic recording device capable of normally operating without crashing a head even by performing the long-term continuous rotation. SOLUTION: The characteristic of this surface modifier is to contain a perfluoropolyether having <=1.324 refractive index and the piperonyl group. The surface modifier comprises an unextracted portion when extracting the perfluoropolyether having the piperonyl group with an organic solvent having >=1.0 Debyes dipole moment without any carboxyl group and hydroxyl group and an organic solvent having a dipole moment within the range of 0-0.6 Debye without the carboxyl group and hydroxyl group in respective amounts of 0.5-20 times based on the perfluoropolyether having the piperonyl group.
