PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject preventive and therapeutic agent effectively acting in a small dosage without causing adverse effects, capable of preventing angiopathic brain edema, improving or treating a morbid state by making the preventive and therapeutic agent include a specific chromanol glycoside. SOLUTION: The preventive and therapeutic agent comprises a chromanol glycoside of formula I [R1 to R4 are each H or a lower alkyl; R5 is H, a lower alkyl or a lower acyl; X is a (substituted) monosaccharide residue or oligosaccharide residue; n is 0-6; m is 1-6] [e.g. 2-(α-D-glucopyranosyl) methyl-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-6-ol] as an active ingredient. The glycoside of formula I is obtained, for example, by an enzyme reaction for reacting a 2-substituted alcohol of formula II with an oligosaccharide, a soluble starch, a starch or a cyclodextrin in the presence of an enzyme for catalyzing a sugar converting action and specifically bonding a specific hydroxyl group of the saccharide to the hydroxyl group at the 2-position of the 2-substituted alcohol.
