PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antimicrobial composition having an excellent antimicrobial property, exhibiting a strong antimicrobial activity even in a low pH region, extremely effective against not only bacteria but also fungi, not deactivated by proteins and useful for treating industrial water, etc., by adding a specific ammonium salt compound as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This antimicrobial composition contains a quaternary ammonium salt compound of the formula: [R2-(A)n-Y+-R3]2.2X- (X- is an anion; Y is pyridyl capable of containing a substituent except R3 or the like; A is a 1-4C alkylene capable of containing an amino group; (n) is 0 or 1; R1 is a 2-18C alkylene or the like; R2 is OCO or the like; R3 is a 6-18C alkyl placed at the N of the group Y) (for example, a compound of formula I) as an active ingredient. The active ingredient is obtained, for example, through the reaction of a compound of formula II with a compound of the formula: R1(OH)2. When the antimicrobial composition is used as an antimicrobial agent for industrial water, the concentration of the active ingredient in the water system is preferably controlled to about 1-1,000 ppm.
