PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable rare earth metal to be cut safely and efficiently and obtain a cutting object of small surface roughness by cutting a columnar or disc-shaped rare earth metal under the cutting conditions in which rotating speed, feed speed, and depth of cut are specified, without using cutting oil, by a lathe. SOLUTION: When a columnar or disc-shaped rare earth metal is cut by a lathe, it is performed under the cutting conditions in which rotating speed is 50-150 rpm, feed speed is 10-50 mm/min, depth of cut is 0.1-2 mm/min, and without using cutting oil. When a square plate-shaped rare earth metal is cut by a milling machine, it is performed under the cutting conditions in which rotating speed is 50-150 rpm. feed speed is 10-50 mm/min, and depth of cut is 0.1-1.5 mm/min, and without using cutting oil. Hereby, the rare earth metal can be cut safely and efficiently, and a cutting object of surface roughness under 25S can be obtained. Consequently this cutting method is suitable for production of a rare earth metal rod used for a rotary electrode for manufacturing rare earth metal powder or a rare earth metal target for sputtering.
